Day 4, Wednesday 3rd September 2014

Tedburn St Mary - West Hatch (Taunton)

Wednesday morning started off well, we were on the road by five past nine pretty good for us. The weather was good and we were making good progress when our planned road was closed off by a surface dressing crew occupying the full with of the road, we checked  the electronic map in the Garmin and we could see if we were quick we could get in front of spraying crew, so we set off at a good rate turning left twice, as we approached the cross roads on our original route the tar tanker was just emerging from the junction, thankfully we were able to turn right onto our route ahead of them and we carried on our route unhindered or so we thought.
Around a mile later Jo T get a puncture,we stopped and put in a new tube. A passing cyclist stopped to offer his assistance,  we rode together for a few miles chatting about the steepness of the hills in Devon and Cornwall and that we had no real hills in Lincolnshire to train on, he reassured us we were heading to Somerset and the hard climbs were behind us, he wished us luck as he turned for home. We carried on and at our next turning there was a sign on the grass verge saying the road ahead was closed due to land slip, we decided we would carry on and investigate as the alternative was a considerable distance. about a mile down the lane the width reduced to a waling track a good indication the route wasn't used often, but on the upside there was still a worn pathway, we progressed until the road stepped down about two feet, We decided we had come this far we might as-well carry on with the adventure.

the road reduced to a track

then the tarmac turned into a staircase going down in steps.

Then it came back up in huge steps

finally our adventure ended and the road returned and we went on our way
looking for a nice spot to stop and eat lunch.
We found a nice manicured verge at the edge of a horse paddock to stop for lunch
it also provided a sheltered entrance for the reapplication of chamois cream.
Lynn having a well earned break after moving to the new campsite
setting up the caravan and pitching our tent

anticipation of waiting

After a fairly eventful day we all arrived  at Ashe Farm

Stopping to pose for a photograph safe in the knowledge the steep hills were behind us.
